AUSD's Levels of Special Education Intervention

Moderate-Severe Level:  

Goal: Provide students with moderate-severe disabilities comprehensive functional life skills.

Delivery:  Assisted curriculum in a Special Day Class and in the community.

 

Practical Level:

Goal: Provide students with moderate disabilities access to grade level CCSS as they apply to real world functioning and meeting post-secondary goals.  

Delivery:  Alternative curriculum in a Special Day Class and in the community.

 

Intensive Level:

Goal:  Build basic skills necessary to reach grade level CCSS in General Education setting.  Intensive courses are intended for students who are not able to access grade level curriculum and content and require intensive remediation in foundational skills in order to make progress toward grade level standards.  

Delivery:  Alternative intervention curriculum taught in a special education class.

 

Strategic Level:

Goal:  To reach grade level CCSS and progress in grade level curriculum.  Strategic courses are intended for students who are able to access grade level curriculum and content in a specific academic area, but require extensive accommodations and /or a slower pace to meet all essential standards.

Delivery:  Strategic courses use core curriculum, as well as supplemental curriculum, and are taught in a special education class.

Adaptive PE

Prerequisite: Individualized Education Plan required.  

 

PZEH Course Description:  This course provides instruction in Physical Education for those students who have moderate to severe disabilities.  This class has fewer students and built-in accommodations for students with disablities.  The main focus is on movement along with increased interaction between student-to-student and student-to-staff interaction.

Communication in the Real World "Bridge" class

Prerequisite: Individualized Education Plan required.  

 

ZXSH Course Description:  This yearlong support course teaches social interaction and problem solving skills for students with social cognitive challenges (e.g. students on the autism spectrum).

Functional Academics A

Prerequisite: Individualized Education Plan required.  

 

Course Description: Building maximum independence in functional applications of Common Core Standards that involve language and communication (verbal, non-verbal, written, electronic, etc.); as well as awareness of community/societal systems in order to facilitate civic involvement and cultural competence.

Independent Living

Course Description: Building maximum independence in the sub-domains that comprise the area of daily living. Areas of focus include safety in school and community setting; self-advocacy; time management; maintaining personal and hygiene; mobility, and transportation; nutrition; and effective social communication.

Intensive History/Social Studies

Prerequisite: Individualized Education Plan required.  

 

ZHQA  Course Description:  Intensive History 6 is a special education course taught in a separate setting.  It is intended for students who are not able to access grade level curriculum and content in History and require intensive remediation in foundational skills in order to make progress toward grade level standards. Intensive courses use alternative, intervention curriculum.

 

ZHQB  Course Description:  Intensive History 7 is a special education course taught in a separate setting.  It is intended for students who are not able to access grade level curriculum and content in History and require intensive remediation in foundational skills in order to make progress toward grade level standards. Intensive courses use alternative, intervention curriculum.

 

ZHQC Course Description:  Intensive History 8 is a special education course taught in a separate setting.  It is intended for students who are not able to access grade level curriculum and content in History and require intensive remediation in foundational skills in order to make progress toward grade level standards. Course Description: Intensive Language Arts provides explicit instruction in foundational language arts skills, geared toward moving students closer to grade level English Language Arts proficiency.

Personal Growth (CEC)

Prerequisite: Individualized Education Plan required.  

 

Course Description: Structured behavioral and emotional skill building for students in the Counseling Enriched Classroom (CEC) Program. This course addresses such needs as coping with frustration, anger, and fear; developing and maintaining interpersonal relationships; adjusting communication style for different audiences; getting needs met in a pro-social way; self-advocacy. The classroom curriculum will include daily opportunities to practice appropriate social behavior and communication.

Strategic Academic Support

Prerequisite: Individualized Education Plan required.

 

ZIBH Course Description: This course provides explicit instruction in learning and executive functioning strategies, as well as specific English Language Arts skills, associated with success independence in general education classes. Sections of this course will be assigned specific areas of focus in order to meet specific identified areas of student need. Example areas of focus are as follows: Reading; Writing; Executive Functioning; Reading and Writing. All sections incorporate instruction in basic organization and assignment management strategies.
