Go Green

Lincoln Middle School's Go Green efforts primarily focus on the Green Waste Program. Through this program, students earn community service hours at school by serving as a "green waste monitor" at lunch for one week.

Students are paired at "stations" across the campus; their job is to help other students sort their trash into the gray bins (landfill/trash), blue bins (recycling), and green bins (compost).

The goal of this program is to:

a) teach students to recycle effectively;

b) reduce the amount of trash going to the landfill; and

c) inspire students to feel a sense of stewardship for their campus and school.

Because there can be as many as 14 students at each lunch duty, we need at least one parent/guardian volunteer at every lunch shift. Typically these volunteers do one shift a week, but they can do more or less than that as fits their schedule. (I.e., you don't have to commit to a certain number of days or even the same day every week.) The volunteers' duties are primarily to:

  • Check the green waste monitors in and out;
  • Make sure they have the tools and information they need to do their jobs;
  • Make sure they understand how to support lunch waste correctly;
  • Make sure they are doing their jobs; and
  • Encourage them to be respectful to their peers and other adults.

This is an extremely fun volunteer position because you get to see the whole lunch scene at LMS, plus you get to hang out with middle schoolers and get to know staff! To sign up for a training, please contact  Please sign up today or contact Nicole Kidd at nicolek954@gmail.com
